Yay!

Finally!

My first day at work after a long boring recovery is on Monday. My doctor told me on friday i could go work ….i celebrated with a on-call session for the next 7 days….

Fedora 8 is almost out, Rawhide is frozen and it is looking good. I am thinking about upgrading my laptop to Rawhide ….hmmm

On 27th of Oct i will head out to Tucson, Arizona as i am going on a IBM showcase of their SAN products (disks, tape drives, software, svc and more). Hopefully i will see something neat there.

Bah….

Nostalgic gameplay ….

Howdy

Since i have been spending alot of my time lately doing nothing i decided to do something really awesome with my time and logged on to ebay and grabbed two copies of Warcraft 2 Battle.net edition.

The package arrived late last night and i have been playing non-stop since 11:00 this mourning. This game was one of the reasons i did not have time for learning anything useful at school, along with Baldur’s Gate 1 and other games alike. Warcraft 2 however was one of the games i spent most of my time in.

However in the last few years i have been playing World of Warcraft alot. Blizzard does amazing job at re-create the Warcraft world in 3d. I did not remember that most of the names of the in-game countrys in WoW are from the old Warcraft world.

Bleh …gonna play some more War2 and heat up some meatballs from the amazing 1944 collection of microwave dinners :) ..

Converting from Windows XP to OpenSUSE 10.3

Hi,

Spent yesterday installing OpenSUSE 10.3 on a friends laptop. He is a web developer mostly writing PHP code.

Asked him if he was interested in upgrading his old SuSE 9.2 install on his 3 year old Acer laptop to OpenSUSE 10.3. We decided on OpenSUSE with Gnome since i think it is one of the most user friendly distributions for not-so-experienced people converting from Windows to Linux.
After few hours of thinking i was done configuring most of the applications he needed.

Applications we configured:

  • Eclipse for PHP development
  • Evolution for email
  • gFTP for basic file transfer tasks
  • Fluendo plugins for GStreamer for WMP streaming etc
  • OpenOffice for word processing etc…
  • Skype for Linux, he is already using Skype on Windows for international calls.

Overall i really like OpenSUSE, the zypper application is a very nice addition to the distribution since i really hated the ZenWorks based software installing system in the earlier 10.* versions. This one has matured a lot and is a very capable Windows replacement distribution.

He still has Windows XP installed for some graphic work but hopefully he will be booting a lot more into Linux for the next year or so…..My good deed is done for the week at least :)

Alive …

Howdy there.

I’ve been recovering from a surgery for the last 3 weeks or so….thought it would be pretty small one but ended up being a couch animal for the last 3 weeks….I have never EVER felt so bored in my entire life….

Hopefully i can go to work next week, i will meet the almighty doctor again tomorrow and hopefully things look good.

The horrible thing about all this is that i have almost not touched my computers for the entire time! …Hopefully i will be fine after this week so i can go back to being ..well ….me :)

Just wanted to let people know that i am atleast not dead :)

Finnzi
