Hi,
Spent yesterday installing OpenSUSE 10.3 on a friends laptop. He is a web developer mostly writing PHP code.
Asked him if he was interested in upgrading his old SuSE 9.2 install on his 3 year old Acer laptop to OpenSUSE 10.3. We decided on OpenSUSE with Gnome since i think it is one of the most user friendly distributions for not-so-experienced people converting from Windows to Linux.
After few hours of thinking i was done configuring most of the applications he needed.
Applications we configured:
- Eclipse for PHP development
- Evolution for email
- gFTP for basic file transfer tasks
- Fluendo plugins for GStreamer for WMP streaming etc
- OpenOffice for word processing etc…
- Skype for Linux, he is already using Skype on Windows for international calls.
Overall i really like OpenSUSE, the zypper application is a very nice addition to the distribution since i really hated the ZenWorks based software installing system in the earlier 10.* versions. This one has matured a lot and is a very capable Windows replacement distribution.
He still has Windows XP installed for some graphic work but hopefully he will be booting a lot more into Linux for the next year or so…..My good deed is done for the week at least
Laters,
Finnzi
