Free time….

Bah…..

Today i had some free time on my hands that could have been used to read up on the BCFP certification i wanted to finish right after the new year…however i ended up wanting to learn Perl. Great ….now i have to read more interesting books…..Ohh! the pain :)

So i have spent more or less the last 2 hours finding some good learning material…..hopefully i can find some time to read…….

Learning Perl (4th edition) from O’Reilly seems to be a very good book, and i have also found some books at the Perl.org library.

Bah …i’m thinking about going to the local bookstore tomorrow and see if i can pick up Learning Perl in hardcopy….

Merry christmas and happy new year

Well,

Now the year is about to come to an end. I started thinking about upgrading my computer since mine is about year old. After browsing for a while i decided to wait a bit since quad core processors are going to get a bit more advanced in few months (hopefully).

Well, just wanted to say merry christmas and happy new year!

Thanks,
Finnzi

Vista-tized…

Howdy,

I snapped last week and decided to go back to Windows. The reason i snapped is because i was working and my X server crashed once again …..Also i have not been able to use the sleep feature of my laptop, hence taking alot of the laptop functionality from a laptop, have not been able to open files from co-workers except from my virtual machine etc etc ….so basically i felt kinda like i could not do my work without using my slow virtual machine and since i have a laptop i want to use laptop functionality like sleep, extend display to my 19″ external LCD screen when i come from home to work and put my laptop in my dock etc etc….

So, i think it was last monday when i netbooted my T61 laptop from RIS server we have at work and did a Vista Enterprise installation. After downloading drivers, Windows Updates, Misc programs i started to configure my usual stuff….Everything works alot better then with my old T60, however that is not saying that i like Vista for being the slow OS it is, i cannot forgive Microsoft the fact that i need a Geforce 7000+ for the “3D” effects and that i need 2GB of ram of more just for it to be usable. BUT, i am able to do my work without any issues, hopefully OpenOffice will have docx, xlsx and other OpenOffice XML formats supported next year and hopefully Evolution Exchange will be better with Exchange servers ….And just maybe the Nvidia drivers will have full RandR 1.2 support…..Just maybe….

The fact is, i need to do a job, and it does not matter for me if i am running Linux or Windows on my laptop, if i just choose the OS that does the job…..

IBM SAN 256B Director …tha shiznit?

Howdy!

Just got off work, decided to go to the liquor store and grab 2 cases of MGD in case i was running out ..turned out that i had some but hey, it cant hurt to have some more :) .

Last night i moved one of our san fabrics to a new core switch, the IBM SAN 256B (Brocade 48K) switch. Since we run a dual fabric no downtime was expected and once again it proved to be the right choice! :) ….at least we did not have any problems what-so-ever.

I’ve been working on some neat projects, planning and configuring 3 RHEL 5 clusters for different tasks, all HA……awesome stuff really :) .

This weekend will probably be spent on doing some migration from my personal server to 2 Xen machines….i decided to upgrade my single server to a larger one and bring out the power of Xen to help me put different services on each server……probably the biggest reason is that i wanted to learn some Xen :) . The dom0 is a AMD X2 6000+ with 6GB Ram running CentOS 5.1.

Hopefully i will have some howto’s here on the page someday, but since i seem to spend most of my time at work lately i don’t know when that will be.

Laters all, can’t leave the beer untouched!
